SciXchange is the C3 Program's science news portal. Each cohort of Hughes Research Fellows and Science Journalism Interns helps populate the site with personal blog entries about their research experiences, and articles or multimedia projects covering everything from on-campus seminars to recently published papers to mainstream pop science news.

Hughes Research Fellows

Hughes Research Fellows are undergraduates working on laboratory research projects in the life sciences. In addition to supporting their lab work, HRFs interact with MU School of Journalism faculty and students to learn how to communicate science more effectively to a public audience. Learn more about the current fellows on the Hughes Research Fellowships page. Click on a fellow's name below to view all SciXchange posts by that student.

Science Journalism Interns

Nina Bolka Sarah Redohl Amanda Stevenson-Grund Alexandra Olgin

Science Journalism Interns are journalism undergraduate students who work on stories, videos and photo essays dealing with science for the SciXchange program. Working alongside the Hughes Research Fellows, the SJIs get a first-hand view of how things work in the sciences and then take their journalism knowledge to make these stories accessible to a public audience.

The position is unpaid, although NSF may be able to subsidize metro transport to and from the Foundation. Students could also work with the J-School undergraduate and graduate student offices about possible course credit for the internship.

Requirements: 1) Experience with video – Final Cut Pro or Avid specifically, 2) Experience and talent with writing, 3) Interest in science communication. Applicants may be undergrads or grad students (MA or PhD).

Applications are accepted annually through March 15. Applicants should send a resume and a letter explaining why they'd like to be considered for this internship to Jon Stemmle at stemmlej@missouri.edu.
